31st May 2026 – Lake Hart overnight stop to Coober Pedy SA

Yes, we did wake early and got out of bed the moment the alarm sounded.

As planned, we left early, 8:20am, with the plan to beat the expected wind.

We drove to Glendambo where we refuelled and headed north immediately.  We ran into the expected wind with less than 100 kilometers to our destination and fortunately, with the speed we were travelling at, the wind did not harm our fuel consumption severely.  The amount of traffic on the road heading north has increased with the Finke Desert race due to be held next weekend contributing to a lot of the traffic.  There is also an increase in people deciding to travel with fuel prices slowly dropping.  We wonder if the expected removal of the excise reduction at the end of June has influenced people to travel now.

We arrived at the caravan park (Stuart Ranges Big 4) just before 12:30pm.  The setup didn’t take long and after lunch, we went to a couple of opal shop to decide on a present.  That done, we returned to our camp site for happy hour.  The visitor’s centre was closed so we agreed to head there first thing in the morning.  Extreme winds are predicted over coming days so any chance to fly to Lake Eyre has disappeared as the operator is fully booked for the day when the winds are expected to reduce.

We cooked our evening meal and then used Starlink to watch television and download emails.

Later in the evening after using the shower in the caravan, we discovered water appearing below a cupboard.  This is our shower issue that was not fixed during the last service and today we placed the caravan in a position where the leak would run to the drain.  In fact, the position was too good.  At the same time, we had two failures of our lights.  Why, we do not know but they did return to normal.  This was something to do we the 12 volt system and we can only presume that the leaking water may have been a contributing factor.
