1st June 2026 – Coober Pedy SA

Last night was warm and “He” slept with just a sheet.

We set the alarm for 6:30am but the sound of vehicles leaving woke us just before the alarm.

Today we agreed to meet at the visitor information centre to plan our day.  We all arrived just after 9:00am and after collecting several brochures, we learnt that the Ghan was parked at the Coober Pedy stop.  A decision was made to drive there after having morning tea.

Our morning tea stop was at a café called “Downunder Gallery and Café”.  Whilst the service was slow, they were very busy, the coffee and other drinks plus the food we ordered was great.

After morning tea, we drove down a dirt road that ran through the opal mines for a distance close to 40 kilometers to see the Ghan parked on a siding.  We took a couple of pictures and then returned to Coober Pedy where we stopped at IGA to purchase some essential items.

By this time, the temperature had risen to 30 degrees which was being fanned by a very strong wind.  Tomorrow the temperature will reduce to 20 degrees, but the wind is expected to continue.

Lunch at the caravan was followed by another look around Coober Pedy including the Serbian Church and the Catholic Church.  Both churches are underground.

The car was dirty, the rear is full of dust, but we will not clean it until after leaving Coober Pedy.  The wind we are experiencing is creating small dust storms that reduce visibility to virtually zero as we drive.

After returning to the caravan park, we headed to the bar near the park reception for a couple of drinks followed by pizza.  We were back at the caravan by 6:30pm.

We setup Starlink and watched television until late.  The series we watch on Paramount Plus are all in recess so we might need to watch normal television or find another series to embrace.

With the wind velocity increasing and the temperature in the caravan around the mid 20’s, we headed to bed around 10pm.
