30th May 2026 – Port Augusta to Lake Hart overnight stop SA

As we were leaving today to head north, we set the alarm for 6:30am.

Today we said goodbye to three members of our group (2 vehicles) who were commencing their journey home in a day or two.  Eleven became eight and it was sad saying goodbye.

Leaving Port Augusta, we headed towards Pimba where we stopped for fuel and an early lunch.  Fuel consumption was ordinary as we were impacted by a slight headwind.

Lunch at Pimba was more than adequate and we soon found ourselves heading towards Lark Hart in a far stronger wind.  The wind blew our fuel consumption off the map.

We were surprised that Lake Hart rest area was not what we expected.  Last time we stayed we were able to drive int the area surrounding the rest stop, an area so large it could accommodate a hundred vehicles.  But no, the access was closed and we discovered that it has been that way possibly since 2022.  So much for the research when planning the trip.  The area is now an overnight fatigue management stop and not a camping site.  We are staying less than 24 hours and consider our stop is fatigue management.

It was hard to find a level area, but we did manage to raise one side of the caravan to make the stay more enjoyable.  It rained during the afternoon, but we still managed to see a good sunset.

We had trouble connecting the Starlink cable to our battery but managed to get it working, eventually.  This is another problem to look at after we return home.

Other than the sound of the occasional passing truck or car, the rest area is very quiet with approximately 12 vehicles stopped.  We planned to leave a little earlier tomorrow to try to get ahead of the expected headwind.

We used Starlink to watch the evening news and then decided to read.  “He” was in bed just after 8:00pm being very tired but worried that he would wake in the very early morning.  “She” was not far behind.
