2nd June 2026 – Coober Pedy SA

The wind blew last night and rather than decrease as you would expect, it increased in intensity.  The caravan did a bit of rocking but compared to other members of our group, it was not severe.

We had another beautiful sunrise with a mild temperature when we got up.

At 9:00am, we meet other members of the group and decided to head to the Umoona Opal Mine and museum where we hope to get an early morning coffee at their café.  After arriving there, we discovered that they didn’t have a café, so we texted the other members of the group suggesting that we meet at the Big Winch when that establishment opened at 11:00am.

We purchased an opal neckless for “Her” and a small jar of opal chips for our collection at home.

We meet the other members at the Big Winch as planned and we enjoyed a later morning tea before watching a 360-degree video on the area.

We had planned to go to the Breakaways in the afternoon but decided to postpone for 24 hours.  Midday was the expected time for the peak of the wind gusts so we can only hope that is the case and tomorrow is a better day.  We have wall to wall blue sky only dampened by the continual wind.

We returned to the caravan after watching a film on the area, the film was most enjoyable.  Later in the afternoon we visited friends in their motorhome and talked for a longtime.

Frozen meals for our evening meal followed by television.  It was a little cooler when we went to bed at 10:15pm.
