17th May 2026 – Wilcannia to White Cliffs NSW

It stopped raining before we exited our bed, but it was very wet outside with puddles of water everywhere.

Fortunately, we were able to prepare for our departure in the dry, but we were very conscious of the black clouds to the north of us.  As the morning progressed, those clouds got lighter.

We decided to meet at White Cliffs with some of the group deciding to have coffee at the Wilcannia café whilst another couple decided to miss coffee and depart later for White Cliffs.

The café was great with good coffee and snacks.  Five of the six RVs attended.

After bidding farewell to the café staff, four of us headed towards White Cliffs on what is a good road for the area.  We had a couple of water hazards to negotiate on the way and the weather waited until we arrived at White cliff for the rain to start again.

The caravan park was very muddy, but we all managed to find suitable sites.

The caravan park manager informed us that there was a Black lighting Tour operating in the evening.  There was also an indication that it would not be raining during the tour.  We accepted the cost of $50pp and agreed to go.

We skipped happy hour deciding to spend the afternoon on the computer before our evening meal at 5:00pm.

Departing from the caravan park at 6:30pm, we headed in a convoy of four vehicles into the opal fields.  We thought we had a problem with our high beam on the car until we realised we were driving with only our daytime running lights.  They were bright.

Once we all arrived at the site, we were given headlamps and UV torches plus an introduction as to what we would be doing.  It was wet and muddy, but we did manage to find opal.  “She” had a fall but did no damage.  One of the group found an opal that was said to be worth about $2000 if you could find the right buyer.

We returned to our camp site with 4wd engaged and with the head lights turned on.  What a difference the headlights make!.  It started to rain again well after we returned.

We were in bed just before 10pm with the sound of rain on the roof.
