23 May 2025 – Rockhampton to Mackay Qld

We set the alarm for 6:30am and got up straight away.  The day started as forecast, overcast and no rain.

We were ready to leave at 8:45am and departed the caravan in our group of three.  The refrigerator did not transition to battery straight away, but the problem was fixed with the resettling of the Andersen plug.

The drive north was uneventful except for watching some motorists, usually in 4WD vehicles, passing several vehicles at once in a manner we deemed to be dangerous.  We have now done over 2000k’s since leaving Sydney and today was the first time we have seen the ocean from the main road.  The drive is becoming a big task, and it is becoming a bit monotonous.  And yes, we are still travelling on the Bruce Highway which is classed as one of the most dangerous roads in Australia.

We stopped at a delightful tiny village called Clairview which is located on the coast.  There was a tiny shop operated by the CWA selling all sorts of things including biscuits and cakes.  We had some biscuits before moving on to Mackay and the Andergrove Van Park.

We were given a site with a concrete slab but the grass around the site was non-existent.  When we arrived, we found out how rough the road was with the handle on the television antenna coming loose and some other items falling of their mounts.  The Bruce Highway is slowly getting worse with more bumps and corrugations and less passing lanes.

Our group was located all over the park and except for one couple, we all met for happy hour.  We were located several kilometers from the township of Mackay so some of the couples who had uncoupled ventured into Mackay to purchase an evening meal.  We had our meal in the caravan using up items that were approaching the use by date.

We watched television before heading to bed.
