We set the alarm for 6:30am and stayed for an extra 5 minutes after the alarm sounded. We were located very close to the amenities area which comprises unisex units containing both a toilet and a shower.
We had arranged to meet our friends , Cathy & Heino at 9:00am and head to the Bundaberg Barrel where they make Bundaberg ginger beer and many other flavours. We enjoyed a self-guided tour that showed the history of the business. After the tour, we sampled, we recall, about 15 different flavours and then received, as part of our entry fee, a pack of 6 self-selected bottles of Bundaberg cordials.
Leaving the Bundaberg Barrel, we drove to the Bundaberg Rum factory where we joined an 11:00am tour of the factory. The tour was extremely informative and very enjoyable. After sampling a couple of different rums, we purchased a liqueur and then enjoyed lunch at the factory.
Leaving the factory we then visited a lavender farm and a splendid lookout (Hummock Lookout – at the top of an extinct volcano)) that gave you a 360-degree view of the area. Before returning to the caravan park, we refuelled and purchased few groceries before heading back to the caravan park for happy hour.
Several other members of the group did alternative activities including a visit to Tinaberries, a working fruit producing farm nestled between the city of Bundaberg and the Southern Great Barrier Reef coastal town of Elliott Heads. Other members were fortunate in that they could visit close relatives.
Three members of our group (Norm, Jan and Monica) visited Fraser Island. They had to drive to the departure point at Hervey Bay for the 9-hour day tour which includes the Shipwreck, Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, 75 Mile Beach and Pinnacles Coloured Sands.
Their tour was by boat to the island then in a 4-wheel drive bus. They left very early and returned late in the evening.
We enjoyed a salad for our evening meal and then watched television. He also reviewed the route for the next day and decided that we need to discuss the next day at happy hour both from the perspective of travel details or activities if we are not travelling between townships.
