14 June 2025 – Mt Surprise (Undara Lava Tubes) to Fletcher Creek Qld

It was mild in bed last night with only the kitchen window wide open.  The doona was on and off as the temperature in the caravan varied.  Wanting to leave by 8:30am, we set our alarm for 6:00am and when it sounded, we pressed the snooze button twice.

Our pack-up was smooth as we are now into the routine of caravan travel.

We timed our departure to meet one of the group members who had been staying in a caravan park at Mt Surprise.  The couple had a small dog with them and that prevented them from entering the Undara National Park.  They arrived about one minute after us.

With their arrival, we had a convoy of four and a short time after returning to the main road, we made a right-hand turn and started the journey towards our Sunday night stop in Hughenden.

Our convoy split when we detoured into the Oasis Roadhouse at The Lynd.  The vehicle that joined us earlier continued on the road towards our overnight stop.  We all refuelled at the roadhouse as did another couple of our group who had also taken the detour.  Whilst we were stopped, we enjoyed a morning tea of shakes and prepared sandwiches.

When planning this trip, we recalled travelling on the Gregory Development Road when it was not much more than a bush track.  In the past fourteen years, there has been a lot of work done to the road and it would now be one of the better roads we have travelled on during this trip.

We arrived at our destination, the Fletcher Creek free camp just before 1:30pm and the group formed a circle.  We have no water, no power and a clear blue sky overhead.

We had a long happy hour before our evening meal and then some time on the computer using a very erratic internet signal.

Expecting a cold night, we were in bed early to sleep (He) and read (She) and to keep warm.
