27 June 2025 – Mitchell to Nindigully Qld

We went to bed last night just after 8pm to get warm.  We were wide awake just after midnight.  We went to sleep just after midnight and were awake just before the alarm sounded.  We were warm enough in bed, but the exposed body parts could feel the cold.

We used the caravan facilities and opened the door just after 8:00am.  It was cold.  No, IT WAS COLD.  He made a statement that if he had stayed outside for any length of time, frostbite could have been a factor.  At 8:00am everything was covered in ice.  By the time we departed just before 9:00am, the sun had melted the ice on the windscreen, but we still needed beanies and gloves.

We refuelled in Mitchell where there was a ten-cent difference between the two major petrol stations and then joined a small convoy of three for the trip to St George.  The route was the shorter of a choice of two but there was nothing at all between Mitchell and St George on this road.  There were several cars going in the opposite direction and several road trains.  We were told that parts of this road were recently sealed, and this road was very similar to the development roads we have travelled on in other parts of Queensland.  Compared with other roads on this trip, this road was great.

We refuelled again in St George which provided enough fuel to reach our next major stop in Moree.  We also purchased bread and ham for our lunch.

We arrived at Nindigully just before 1:00pm and levelled the caravan, dropped the stabilisers and then had lunch.  We had plans to have our evening meal in the Nindigully Hotel but learned that they had run out of food on the previous night and as this was the first day of the Queensland school holidays, they were doing a buffet style meal in the evening.

We have stayed at the Nindigully Pub twice before and we noted several changes to the surrounds but not to the pub.  An old bridge that crossed the river was gone having been taken by a flood.  The parking areas looked different and the whole place looked a lot tidier.

We went to the hotel at 4:00pm and organised a table for ourselves and everyone purchased a meal ticket at $28pp for the buffet.  As far as the meal went, the food was plentiful and nice.  The hotel had a one-man band performing and he provided great music for everyone to enjoy.  We believe that all of our group enjoyed the meal, the company and the music.

We left the hotel just before 7:45pm and headed back to a cold caravan.  We don’t expect it to be as cold tomorrow so we will now see what the night brings.
