. . . → Read More: 6 June 2007 – Kings Canyon to Yulura]]> Up early and departed by 7.45am. We had a bit of a scare with the van as the oil indicator light began flashing. The oil was checked and found to be OK and the light went out immediately the engine was restarted.

The first part of the trip was spent driving into the rising sun. Fortunately we have slowed down to conserve fuel as two kangaroos jumped across the road about 100 meters in front of us. We also had to stopped to look at the wild camels and had to let a couple cross the road before we were able to move on. We were also amased to see a deceased camel on the side of the road that had been hit by a vehicle. I would hate to imagine what it did to the vehicle.

First major stop was made at the Mt Connor viewing point. This mesa like mountain is often mistaken for Uluru. It is about the same height as Uluru. Next stop was at Curtin Springs where we had a quick snack.

After Curtin Springs we scanned the horizon for glimpses of Uluru and when we finally was the rock, the view and the overall feeling was magical. For “Him”, Uluru was on the list of things to do “before you die” and being here was very hard to describe. It is not hard to appreciate the culture in this area and how important it is to respect the original Australians.

We checked into the camp site and before working out the levels for the vehicle, we made a quick trip to the local supermarket and booked an evening flight over the rock in a light aircraft.

Back at the site we had a quiet afternoon before we were collected at 5.00pm for the flight.

The flight was in a twin engine “Pativa” and we shared the experience with another couple who live in Cleveland in Queensland.

The flight was excellent and we had good views of both the Olgas and Ayres Rock. The trip was planned for the aircraft to arrive at Ayres Rock at the time of sunset. The arrival was timed to perfection and we were lucky that the sun cleared clouds about 2 minutes before sunset. The rock from the air was magnificent.

We visited our friends from Melbourne on the way back to the van and utilised our “emergency meals”.

After some time on the computer, we had a early night.
