24 August 2016 – Mildura VIC to Hay NSW

Our alarm failed to sound at the time that was set.  Fortunately “He” glanced at another clock three minutes after our planned “rise” time.   When we opened our door we noted that it had rained overnight and there was some dark cloud around.

The rain started to fall about 5 minutes before “He” had completed our pack-up and hitch process.  Whilst the rain was inconvenient, it did not hinder our departure.

We actually departed Mildura in light rain and with the wipers on.  It was actually good to have a clean windscreen.

The drive from Mildura to Hay was broken with a comfort stop at Balranald.  After Balranald, the wind increased slightly and impacted our fuel consumption slightly.

Arriving in Hay around lunchtime, we refuelled before driving to our intended overnight stop, the free camp at Sandy Point.  When arriving in Hay we noted a fair amount of water on the ground.  The road into the camp site clearly stated “Dry weather Only” and we did note that there was evidence of parts of the road being muddy and there was mud and water laying on the ground in the actual camp site.  Being conscious that one of the vehicles is front wheel drive and can have problems with traction in wet and muddy conditions (the forecast was for the chance of showers  but we hope it will remain dry), we decided to abandon the free camp idea and head to a caravan park.  This was a little disappointing as Sandy Point is an excellent free camp.  We had planned to stay here last year when involved with an Australian Caravan Club tagalong but could not due to the number of vehicles we had attending the tagalong.

We booked into the Big4 caravan park and were allocated adjacent sites and given the option to park however we pleased.  The sites allocated still bear the evidence of significant rainfall in the area as the ground in extremely soft underfoot.

Later in the afternoon we continued playing “Sequence” (the score is now 15 to 4 in favour of the boys) whilst enjoying an extended happy hour.

We had steak and mushrooms with some salad for tea.  Television reception is very poor so we spent the evening getting this blog up to date and also installing some computer

updates with the remaining data allowance we have this month (a new month starts tomorrow).
